Chapter 9

“So, how was the wedding?” Harley asked as Jackie returned with the empty tray after filling up the showcase with some freshly baked beef pies that Harley helped make. She was learning so much since working at the bakery, that she no longer considered herself clueless when it came to being in a kitchen.

“It was lots of fun, plus I got to meet some really hot looking guys.”

“I just wish they lived in Greenville, I’m not into long distance romances.”

“So, anything interesting happen with one of these hot looking guys?” Harley asked coyly.

“Shhh, a lady does not tell.” Jackie laughed as she brought out her phone and showed Harley pictures from the wedding.

“Oh the Bride and Groom look really lovely together, but who’s the girl I keep seeing you next to?”

“Oh that’s Darcy, the groom’s sister, we met at the rehearsal dinner and man she’s a riot.”

“In fact, she’s leaving after tomorrow so after work we’re going to get some dinner and maybe go bowling.”

“Sounds like fun, I’m glad you made a new friend even though it’s not one of the hottie groomsmen.”

“Arrrgh, don’t remind me, I’m really giving some thought to signing up on a dating app.

“Hey Harley, Melanie is outside to see you.” Lizzy called out as she breezed into the kitchen.

“Lucky you.” Jackie said winking at her.

“Maybe you should forget the guys and try a woman.” Harley said cheekily and laughed when she saw Lizzy’s curious expression.

“Hey Babe, you’re back early.” Harley stepped into Melanie’s open arms and enjoyed the hug and kiss she got. There were no customers around so they were able to steal a much longer kiss.

“Yeah, the meeting with the guys who will be doing the research for us went well. They’ve already contacted a few of the larger organizations and they are interested in our ideas.”

“That is so good, thank you Melanie for doing this. Not everyone is lucky to have people like you and the others I’ve met since coming to Greenville.”

Both women hugged each other and it was not too long before they started kissing again, oblivious to the fact that someone had entered the bakery and had come up behind them.

A strong hand grabbed at Harley’s hair, pulling her out of Melanie’s hold and sending her crashing against one of the tables. In pain and shock Harley turned her head in time to see Greg back handing Melanie, sending her sprawling across the room.

“You fucking bitch!” Greg screamed. “You left me for a woman. You fucking whore.” Greg’s face was a red with rage and he turned from Harley and advanced towards Melanie.

“I’ll show this bitch exactly what she’s missing.”

Harley finally found her voice and screamed as she saw Greg undoing his belt…she knew what would happen next.

“Oh God Melanie!” She cried out, seeing the other woman’s lifeless body sprawled on the floor. Heavy dread filled her before being quickly being replaced by burning hot rage.

She did not see or hear Jackie and Lizzy enter the front, all
