Chapter 9
âSo, how was the wedding?â Harley asked as Jackie returned with the empty tray after filling up the showcase with some freshly baked beef pies that Harley helped make. She was learning so much since working at the bakery, that she no longer considered herself clueless when it came to being in a kitchen.
âIt was lots of fun, plus I got to meet some really hot looking guys.â
âI just wish they lived in Greenville, Iâm not into long distance romances.â
âSo, anything interesting happen with one of these hot looking guys?â Harley asked coyly.
âShhh, a lady does not tell.â Jackie laughed as she brought out her phone and showed Harley pictures from the wedding.
âOh the Bride and Groom look really lovely together, but whoâs the girl I keep seeing you next to?â
âOh thatâs Darcy, the groomâs sister, we met at the rehearsal dinner and man sheâs a riot.â
âIn fact, sheâs leaving after tomorrow so after work weâre going to get some dinner and maybe go bowling.â
âSounds like fun, Iâm glad you made a new friend even though itâs not one of the hottie groomsmen.â
âArrrgh, donât remind me, Iâm really giving some thought to signing up on a dating app.
âHey Harley, Melanie is outside to see you.â Lizzy called out as she breezed into the kitchen.
âLucky you.â Jackie said winking at her.
âMaybe you should forget the guys and try a woman.â Harley said cheekily and laughed when she saw Lizzyâs curious expression.
âHey Babe, youâre back early.â Harley stepped into Melanieâs open arms and enjoyed the hug and kiss she got. There were no customers around so they were able to steal a much longer kiss.
âYeah, the meeting with the guys who will be doing the research for us went well. Theyâve already contacted a few of the larger organizations and they are interested in our ideas.â
âThat is so good, thank you Melanie for doing this. Not everyone is lucky to have people like you and the others Iâve met since coming to Greenville.â
Both women hugged each other and it was not too long before they started kissing again, oblivious to the fact that someone had entered the bakery and had come up behind them.
A strong hand grabbed at Harleyâs hair, pulling her out of Melanieâs hold and sending her crashing against one of the tables. In pain and shock Harley turned her head in time to see Greg back handing Melanie, sending her sprawling across the room.
âYou fucking bitch!â Greg screamed. âYou left me for a woman. You fucking whore.â Gregâs face was a red with rage and he turned from Harley and advanced towards Melanie.
âIâll show this bitch exactly what sheâs missing.â
Harley finally found her voice and screamed as she saw Greg undoing his beltâ¦she knew what would happen next.
âOh God Melanie!â She cried out, seeing the other womanâs lifeless body sprawled on the floor. Heavy dread filled her before being quickly being replaced by burning hot rage.
She did not see or hear Jackie and Lizzy enter the front, all
